Dmitry Beliakov on War Photography and Photojournalism

To discuss this, we sat down with Dmitri Beliakov, a renowned photojournalist and prominent war photograper. Dmitri takes though his personal journey in documenting conflicts, and we discuss his experiences in Chechnya and the Donbas, the field of photojournalism, and the need for photojournalists to prioritize their safety while striving to document important stories.


In our conversation, we also talked about the role of social media and citizen journalism in documenting conflicts today, the ethical considerations of those documenting conflicts, and finally, the mission of photojounalism to inform the public.

Dmitri Beliakov


Dmitri Beliakov is a renowned Russian photojournalist. He has documented conflicts such as the First and Second Chechen Wars and the War in Ukraine. Beliakov's photographs have been published in publications like The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Der Spiegel, and many others. His work has been recognized internationally, including at the Visa Pour L'Image Festival in France. Beliakov is now a research fellow at the Peace and War Center of Norwich University.
